Phantom Songs 17 HIPPIES – a band with more than ten faces, on the road for more than 16 years. A band with a very own distinctive musical style that combines a huge variety of influences from all over Europe, and a unique energetic stage performance. Still truly independent, the band has made its mark in the international music scene, touring worldwide (in the true sense of the word). In their own way, they have become a role model for so many others.

PHANTOM SONGS is the 10th album of the 17 HIPPIES, and their fourth studio album. It shows the band´s curiosity about taking on yet unheard musical forms. New sounds and gripping grooves, together with the band´s familiar acoustic instrumental set-up result. Yet another facet of their own kind of song writing that the band is renowned for. In a first-time collaboration, the album was co-produced by JD Foster (New York), who contributed to some of the mixes and recordings and was a welcome addition to the long standing production team from Berlin.

On PHANTOM SONGS, the 17 HIPPIES focus on the song itself. 13 stories about what moves, motivates, and amuses them. That good old truth about love – unashamedly exposed. Looking ahead with ease – the dark past fading. It´s the spirit of the time, of the present, which drifts through the German, French, and English lyrics – including that tradition of 17 HIPPIES-albums: a song sung in Hessian dialect, this time sounding rather Arabic.

PHANTOM SONGS draws its truth from what the band has lived. Most of the band spent their youth in Berlin in the 1960/70/80ies, and Anglo-American music left its mark on them. Eastern Europe was just around the corner, and after the Fall of the Wall a steady influx of a variety of people from all over the world set in and continues. All this is reflected in the 17 HIPPIES-sound and expressed by the individual band members in their very own, unique voices.

It is impossible to define the music of the 17 HIPPIES. It changes and therefore attracts its audience anew every time. The band´s fans know that. They also know that the 17 Hippies have always taking seriously the music they play around with. And they know that there is a unique spirit that holds it all together and draws everyone in.

17 HIPPIES - ONLY TRIBES WILL SURVIVE

The 17 HIPPIES are one of the most innovative acts in the German music scene today. The term world music does not suffice to describe the way in which the band has taken its musical strengths to top form in recent years. Oh, and by the by: don´t bother to count the band members! The number 17 just sounds good and does not necessarily stand for what crosses the mind… or what you might see on stage.

PHANTOM SONGS is the band’s tenth album. They have toured across the globe performing in more than 20 countries so far. In March 2011, they will be the first German band ever to perform at the legendary WOMAD Festival in Australia and New Zealand.

The 17 HIPPIES repertoire spans more than the sum of all identifiable components. It all started with the idea to take music down to its smallest common denominator, to make it possible for as many muscians as possible to join. Their own story began as collectors of melodies and traditional grooves of their neighbourhood: Balkan tunes and rhythms giving new impulses to their Western rock/pop & jazz background. A mix of music to match each band member. They play a multitude of acoustic instruments to create their unmistakable sound.

PHANTOM SONGS focuses on songs and stories. It shows the impressive musical path that the 17 HIPPIES are following. Without losing sight of their origins, they are constantly on the move – open, changeable, and with breath-taking ease... right on the pulse of time.
